Soft Columns is part of my ongoing exploration with standardized architectural elements. When extruded, the clay often finds its way to balance itself in between any void in the barrel, gravity, an inconsistent downward force from me, and other physical limitations of the space, creating often unexpected forms. In this series, there was minimal finishing work so that the “failure” from physical limitations is exposed in contrast with a glossy glazed surface that resembles mass-produced industrial products.
